Pearl City plates 6 runs in 8th inning to beat Kapolei 9-3, Kaaialii goes the distance (3/11/2017)

Pearl City poured it on in the top of eighth inning to beat Kapolei 9-3 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division I Softball played on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Kapolei High School.

The Lady Chargers and Lady Hurricanes finished the end of regulation play after seven complete innings tied at 3-3 with the Lady Chargers due up in extra innings in the top of the eighth inning. The Lady Chargers went on to rally for six runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead over the Lady Hurricanes. The Lady Chargers stopped the Lady Hurricanes in the bottom of the eighth behind the arm of ace Tyanna Kaaialii who went the distance for the win.

Kaaialii pitched 8 complete innings, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Sadie Kapaku-You took the loss for the Lady Hurricanes. Kapaku-You pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing 9 runs on 14 hits with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Tatum Guzman pitched 1/3 innings in relief of Kapaku-You.

The Lady Chargers exploded at the plate pounding out 14 hits over 8 innings of play. Taylor Shigeta continued her hot bat at the plate hitting 3-4, scored 2 runs, 1 RBI, and belted 3 doubles. Jade McFarland went 3-5, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 RBI.

The Lady Hurricanes were led by Chasity McKeane who batted 2-3, with 1 run, and 1 RBI. Tatum Guzman went 2-4. Chanelle Makinney hit 1-2 with 1 RBI.

The Lady Chargers will host the state’s #1 ranked Campbell Lady Sabers on Tuesday, March 14 in a top billed OIA Western Division I showdown of the undefeated. At stake is the top spot in league play and possibly the state’s DI top ranking. Campbell and Pearl City are ranked 1st and 3rd respectively in the state’s DI softball top 10 poll. Both teams will enter next Tuesday’s contest at 3-0.
