Pearl City Head Baseball Coach Wes Yonamine and his Charger baseball players teamed up with players and coaches from Iolani and Punahou on Saturday to help move Kahauiki Village in Kalihi one step closer to its grand opening this weekend.

Thirty families currently housed in shelters across Oahu, will move into brand homes at Kahauiki Village this Saturday, January 13. It’s the first 30 homes representing Phase I of a total of 150 homes planned for the Kahauiki Village community when completed.

The high school baseball players split up into two groups on Saturday to help with Kahauiki Village landscaping and to complete furnishing each home with donated household goods.  Group I landscaping duties included hauling top soil in wheel barrels throughout the village, spreading top soil around each home and along sidewalk pathways, and sidewalk clean-up. Group 2 placed furniture (tables, chairs), bedding (sheets), and sorted kitchen utensils and supplies in each of the 30 homes.

The ball players and their coaches worked hard and efficiently until their Kahauiki Village volunteer duties were completed for the day at around noon. They joined a very special group of volunteers representing Oahu community organizations, businesses, schools, and government, who have volunteered their time in the past couple of months to prepare Kahauiki Village for an amazing moment in time that will truly transform homeless families from a life of uncertainty into a life changing experience that will allow the many men, women, and children the opportunity to thrive in a clean, safe, and positive environment that offers Hope and Purpose for a better life and future.

A very heartfelt mahalo to Duane Kurisu, Kahauiki Village visionary and driving force behind the delivery of a permanent solution to our homeless crisis on Oahu.  His compassion for the welfare of our homeless families has bonded together the “Heart and Soul” of a community that exemplifies the same compassion as they volunteer their time and services to the success of Kahauiki Village.  The hope is that their collective efforts will inspire, teach, encourage, and serve as a template that will make a difference in ending the homeless culture and its consequences in Hawaii, and one day, across the globe.

Mahalo to all the volunteers who has made a difference and continues to make a difference at Kahauiki Village!

GO CHARGERS, RAIDERS, BUFF N' BLUE!
