UH Rainbows join top high school coaches at Hui O Momilani Basketball Clinic

Students from grades 1- 6 had a great opportunity on Saturday, May 21 to learn from some of Hawaii’s best basketball coaches and players at the First Annual "Hui O Momilani" Basketball Clinic held at the Pearl City High School gym.

“The camp went well and we had a good turnout,” said Dwayne Yuen, Hui O Momilani Basketball Clinic organizer and coach. “We got a total of about one-hundred twenty kids for two sessions. We also had a lot of high school kids that Coach Dennis Agena got to volunteer because he’s teaching them about giving back through community service and thinking about others before yourself.

The basketball clinic featured the following coaches:

Dennis Agena- Founder of Kalakaua Basketball

Mike Taylor - Former Punahou Girls Varsity Head Coach (2002 - 2011)

Byron Mello - Former Maryknoll Varsity Head Coach (2008-2011)

Kekoa Taliaferro - Current Punahou Girls Varsity Head Coach (2011 - Present)

Alan Lum - Former Punahou Boys Varsity Head Coach

Also helping out on Saturday was current University of Hawaii Rainbow basketball players, Miah Ostrowski (men’s team) and Shawna-Lei Kuehu (women’s team).

“It feels good just to come back because I remember playing here when I was little,” said Ostrowski. “ It’s just to come out and help the kids and all the younger generation, just to try and help motivate them into later being players themselves. It’s just a recycle of like when I was little, I had guys older than me that I looked up to and listened to and I’m just trying to return the favor.”

Saturday’s Hui O Momilani Basketball Clinic proved to be a big success with the kids and plans to make the camp an annual event is in the works.

“Our camp counselors and camp coaches are great,” Yuen said. “They tried their best to make sure the kids are learning but yet at the same time their comfortable and having a good time. I think this is an event that we’re going to have annually. Probably have the same coaches and hopefully the same kids so we can build relationships and they can improve their skills. The camp turned out a lot better than we expected but we got a lot of help from people in the community and people in the school and help from around the state."

Proceeds from the clinic will go towards funding Momilani Elementary School's academic programs and activities.
