Pearlridge Rotary Club Donates Dictionaries to Pearl City and Aiea 3rd Graders

Aloha,

A Message from Pearlridge Rotary Club President Roy Matsuo: Rotary International and our Hawaii District 5000 have asked individual Clubs to promote Rotary…our Pearlridge Club has rarely promoted our involvement in Community Service, believing that the “word” of our many great community service projects will somehow get around? And especially for our Hawaii Rotary District 5000’s Dictionary Project, which we are heavily involved in and have been for many years.

Our Club is grateful to be involved in the community with this terrific “feel good” project that basically falls under our Youth Service and Literacy Programs. Our dictionaries are provided for 3rd graders and our message in presenting dictionaries to them is to encourage them to use a dictionary so that they will be able to use the English language effectively and to emphasize that in the business world, it is important to understand and spell words correctly.

Our “A Student Dictionary” contains: A comprehensive dictionary; Weights and Measures; The Declaration of Independence; Maps of seven continents; Information about our 50 states; Biographies of our 43 Presidents and Facts about nine planets in the solar system and of course the world’s longest word consisting of 1,909 letters.

And perhaps most importantly, these dictionaries are given to 3rd graders… they are asked to write their names in the dictionaries and share them with their family as well.

We have already presented dictionaries to Momilani Elementary and will be presenting to Lehua Elementary on November 19th at 10:30AM. Dictionaries will be presented to Pacific Palisades Elementary on Wednesday, November 25th at 10:00AM. We are presently trying to schedule delivery to Waiau Elementary School. Dictionaries have already been presented to Gus Webling Elementary.

I’ve been a Rotary for 35 plus years, and our dictionary project is one of my few super feel good projects that I have been involved in! And, our elementary schools have openly welcomed our presentations of dictionaries to their 3rd graders!
