Mahalo to HIS Campus Beautification Day volunteers!

Written by Audrey Mikami:

The Highlands Intermediate School (HIS) Campus Beautification event was held on Saturday, February 19, 2011, from 8 a.m. – noon, at Highlands Intermediate School in Pearl City. The weather this time around was perfect. More than 220+ volunteers, from age 5 to 80, showed up to help from the Pearl City community and beyond.

HIS students welcome volunteers at the entrance of the school.

We repainted more than a dozen restrooms; blue for boys and lavender for girls.  We also repainted the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms and gave the PE courtyard, railings and surrounding buildings a fresh coat of paint.  Lastly, we repainted the lines and curbs in three parking lots and branded the school library with our new logo.

Besides HIS students, faculty and staff, students from Pearl City High School’s Key Club, French Club, Anime/Fil-Am Club, Victory Club, and even the Girls Varsity Basketball Team participated in the event.

Churches and community groups included among others, folks from the First Baptist Church Pearl City, Grace Bible Church, the Pearl City Lions Club, the Pearl City Community Association, Boys Scout Pack 326, Girls Scout Troop 1039, the Senior Band Club, and the Manawa Elua Band who also entertained the volunteers during lunch.

Businesses participated in the event as well by way of volunteers and/or donations.  They included McDonalds Aiea, Starbucks Pearl City, AES Hawaii, Target Kapolei, Cookie Corner Downtown Pearlridge, Bernardo’s Painting, Glidden Professional Paint Center (formerly ICI Paints), and Sherwin-Williams Co.

The event would not have been possible had it not been for the many volunteers who donated their time, supplies and/or refreshments.  Special thanks go out to the Pearl City Shopping Center for their generous donation to the school, and to HIS alumni, Mr. Mark Char, of Handyman Sent By the Lord (ph: 681-5648), for his professional services and assistance in obtaining much needed supplies for the event.

On behalf of the 900+ students, the faculty, staff, and the PTSA, a big, big mahalo to all.
