Red Cross Citizens CPR Kick-Off and Emergency Preparedness Fair activities:

(information provided by the Red Cross)

Citizen CPR kickoff– this is part of a National Red Cross initiative to save more lives by educating 5 million people about “Citizen CPR” by the end of 2011.   Compression Only CPR involves simply giving continuous chest compressions (without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation).  Recent research shows that if more people learned Compression-Only CPR, we could increase the likelihood of surviving cardiac emergencies that occur outside a hospital by putting more victims within a few steps of lifesaving assistance. Every minute that person goes without oxygen reduces their survival rate by 10%.  The Red Cross recognizes that providing instruction on giving quality Compression-Only CPR encourages and enhances the capacity of bystanders to react and respond when they witness an adult or adolescent suddenly collapse.

We will be doing demonstrations and giving shoppers an opportunity to learn this lifesaving skill using lively “Staying Alive” music (this is the rhythm used to do chest compressions) and actars (manikins).

Blood pressure screening

Disaster Preparedness display & presentation – Red Cross volunteers will take the stage to talk about how individuals and families can prepare themselves for a disaster, including making a plan, building a kit, and keeping informed.  We will also have our Disaster Dog (costumed character) distributing disaster preparedness flyers.

Services to armed forces – we will have a display and informational flyers on Red Cross services to military service members and their families.

Scrubby Bear (costumed character) will dispense hand sanitizer and hand out stickers and an informational flyer on proper hand washing techniques.

Family Caregiving booklet/DVD– Lions Club members will be giving away 250 free Red Cross Family Care giving booklet/DVDs (courtesy of a Weinberg grant) with a retail value of $24.95 each.  Family Caregiving is a quick reference guide and DVD that teaches individuals basic care skills for an elderly or chronically ill loved one. The 128-page, full-color, spiral-bound book is tabbed to allow easy access to critical information, and includes charts for recording vital signs and medications, as well as a tri-fold Emergency Contact Card to keep with a loved one in case of an emergency.   Plus, the 1 hour and 49 minutes DVD will help caregiver’s master skills such as positioning and transferring a loved one by watching healthcare experts in actions.  Topics include home safety, caregiving skills, body mechanics, personal care, healthy eating, caring for the caregiver, legal and financial issues, and dealing with dementia.  (see flyer attached)

Products display & demonstration – Red Cross disaster and first aid kits and other products will be on display, and proper contents will be discussed during on stage presentation.
