Pearl City advances to OIA quarterfinals with 6-3 win over Kalani

The Pearl City Lady Chargers turned back the Kalani Lady Falcons 6-3 on Monday at Pearl City High School in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) Red Division Varsity Softball Championship Tournament.

The Lady Chargers (6-7) (W4) advanced to the quarterfinals today and will face OIA East Champion and tournament top seed, Castle (11-1) at the Lady Knights home field. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.

Pearl City's, Sella Rodriguez pitched seven complete innings on Monday to earn the win against the Lady Falcons the #5 seed from the OIA Red Eastern Division. Rodriguez allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in going the distance.

Kalani's, Jade Teruya pitched six innings, allowing 6 runs and 8 hits in the loss to Pearl City.

The Lady Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Keani Passi that drove in Courtney Ahlo followed by a an RBI single by Joe-Ann Rapoza that scored Passi from second base.

In the top of the third inning Kalani scored two runs to tie the ball at 2-2.

Pearl City scored one run in the bottom of fourth inning on an RBI single by Kayla Leleo that scored Rapoza from second base. The Lady Chargers went ahead 3-2.

The Lady Falcons tied the ball game, once again, at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning on error by Nicole Sato in right field. The Falcons would leave runners on first and third base to end the top half of the inning.

The Lady Chargers closed the door on the Lady Falcons with a 3 run bottom of the fifth inning rally that would seal the victory. Ashley-Laura Johnson led off with a a single to right field. Courtney Ahlo hit a double to put runners on second and third. Sierra Mendiola followed with a double that scored Johnson from third base. Passi stroked a one out 2 RBI single that drove in Ahlo from third and Mendiola from second. Pearl City ended the inning with a 6-3 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning. Kalani would leave one runner on base in the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
