Rose Garden takes root at Urban Garden Center in Pearl City

The Honolulu Rose Society has a brand new rose garden to call home at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City. Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Pearlridge and the Honolulu Pau Hana Rotary Club teamed up with Rosarians from the Honolulu Rose Society and the Urban Garden Center's Master Gardeners Association on Saturday to install over 135 rose plants in the new rose garden.

On November 29 of 2010, the Rotary Club of Pearlridge sent a volunteer crew to the Urban Garden Center to assist the Master Gardeners Association in preparing seven rose beds for the future rose garden. The group dug out each bed which also included preparing the soil for the future planting of the different varieties of roses.

Honolulu Rose Society President, Myrna Cariaga and 2010 Master Gardener Association President, Bob Speers led the volunteers through the chores of the day. The volunteers divided up into groups of four per bed. Each group was responsible for digging holes, planting, fertilizing, watering and spreading a layer of compost mulch on each bed. Rosarian volunteers worked along side each group to assist and offer their expertise.

The work wasn't easy under the hot Pearl City mid day sun but the volunteers were well rewarded with a barbecue luncheon that was generously sponsored by the Urban Garden Center. A big mahalo went out to Chef David for his talents on the grill. Teriyaki chicken, hot dogs, steak and sausage filled the volunteers bellies after a hard days work.

Most importantly, the new Urban Garden Center Rose Garden looks great and soon visitors to the garden will be able to enjoy the many varieties of beautiful roses.

Mahalo to the Rotary Club of Pearlridge and the Honolulu Pau Hana Rotary Club for their dedication in completing another community service project that will benefit us all.

A special mahalo to Rotary Club of Pearlridge Community Service Project Chairperson, Tony Lorenzo for his efforts in organizing the partnership that has turned into a friendship with the Urban Garden Center and Honolulu Rose Society.

Rosarians and Rotarians, great buds!
