Pearl City powers past Waiakea 5-2 to reach state semifinals

The Pearl City Chargers bounced #4 seed Waiakea from the winners bracket in a 5-2 victory over the Big Island champions in the quarterfinals of the HHSAA State Division I Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Pearl City Chargers starting pitcher, Tyler Tokunaga tossed seven complete innings, allowing 2 runs and 8 hits for the victory. Waiakea's, Quintin Torres-Costa  gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings of work.

The Chargers welcomed back starters Chevas Numata and Troy Barboza Scanlan who both sat out Wednesday's first round 3-1 victory over Kamehameha-Maui.

Numata got things started in the first inning with a 2-run homerun off of Waiakea starting pitcher, Torres-Costa that cleared the right field fence.

Waiakea put up one run in the second, and one run in the third inning to tie the score at 2-2.

In the third inning, Scanlan ripped an RBI double to left center that scored Tyler Tokunaga to put the Chargers up 3-2.

Tanner Tokunaga took care of business in the sixth inning to secure the Chargers lead and victory with a 2 RBI triple to left center that scored Kory Nakamura and Sheldon Milan.

The Chargers (15-3) move on to the semifinals and will face Kailua (15-1-1) on Friday at 4:00pm. Kailua defeated the #1 ranked St. Louis Crusaders (16-3) on Thursday 3-2.

Moanalua (14-1-1) and Baldwin (15-0) will meet in the second semifinal match up on Friday at 7:00pm.

* Note: Pearl City defeated Kailua 8-7 in the semifinals of the OIA Red Division Championships a couple weeks ago at the Kailua Surfriders home field.
