Pearl City wins preseason opener 31-27 over Waimea

Pearl City held off a late fourth period Waimea run to defeat the Lady Menehune from Kauai 31-27 in the opening game of the First Hawaiian Bank Moanalua Preseason Peek Tournament played at Moanalua High School on Thursday, November 17, 2011.

The Lady Chargers move on in the winners bracket to play the winner of the Kamehameha/Kailua match up on Friday at 6:00pm at Moanalua High School. Waimea will play the Kamehameha/Kailua loser at 3:00pm in the Consolation bracket.

In Pearl City's win last night, Lady Charger's senior starting guard,  Sabrina Angel continued where she left off from last season, leading all scorers with 18 points including four-three pointers. Twin sister Shawna Angel pumped in 7 points. Dani Magana (4 points) and Tiari Walker (2 points) rounded out the Lady Chargers scoring.

Waimea's #12 Vakeesha Lagazo led the Lady Menehune with 12 points.

Pearl City had no trouble with Waimea in the first half behind the hot hand of Sabrina Angel as they led at the half 18-8. Waimea came out in the third period and made a game of it closing within two points at 21-19 to end the period.

The Lady Chargers came back in the fourth period moving out to a 10 point lead 29-19 at 6:10 left in the period. Waimea made a run down the stretch, outscoring the Lady Chargers 8-2 but came up short 31-27.

Waimea's #12 Vakeesha Lagazo and Pearl City's #2 Sabrina Angel went head to head on both offense and defense Thursday night. Lagazo (12 points) and Angel (18 points) led their teams in scoring.
