We are honored to recognize Chaney Durham, Office Manager of the Pearl City, Hawaii Self Storage location and her staff as our PC Heart & Soul selection for the month of November.
Durham leads a team of Hawaii Self Storage employees / community volunteers that are fully committed to serving and giving back to our community. Through the company’s “Community Pride” outreach programs, Hawaii Self Storage reaches deep into communities throughout Hawaii with programs that support; Scholarships, Literacy, Sponsorships, Charity Support, Community Service, and a Keiki Care Home.
Hawaii Self Storage employees that represent 6 locations on Oahu are encouraged to support their communities through the company’s community volunteer program that rewards each employee for hours spent volunteering.
“To encourage our employees and ourselves to go out into the community and do more volunteer work, what the owner of company, Mike Wood has done is for every hour that we work as volunteers, they take the money that we would have earned working in the office and at the end of the quarter we get to choose what non-profit we want to donate that money to,” said Durham.
“Not only are we volunteering our time to the community, but our company, in a thanks to our work outside of work for the community, pays a non-profit of our choice, a non profit that we care about,” added Durham.
Hawaii Self Storage also awards an employee who has served the most volunteer hours in the community throughout the year.
“At the end of the year, we do present an award to whoever served the most volunteer hours and we actually do have a little competition that goes on. Steve Veray won last year. He is the manager of our Salt Lake location and he lives here in Pearl City. Steve does a lot of work with the State Emergency Program. If he’s not at work he’s doing that. I think he’s going to have a little competition this year,” Durham said.
There so many ways, big and small, that Hawaii Self Storage continues to make a difference in our community. Most importantly, their support of our schools and literacy via the company’s free books program. Youth sports also benefit from their generosity as well as non profit organizations who serve our community as volunteers.
“We supply schools with books, we provide free lockers for some sports teams, and we also provide financial donations to some of the sports teams, Durham said. “We will also provide a free locker for a non profit group. If you’re out in the community and doing something good, we want to reward you. We want to help you. If we have space that you can use to do that and make it easier for you, we want to do it.”
The company also offers a program for new customers that will donate half of their first month’s rental fee to a non profit of their choice.
“We have a program that I want to get out more,” Durham said. I want more people to hear about it. If you need storage, say you’re moving, or renovating, for whatever reason you need storage, if they come to us, we can donate half of their first month’s rent to a non profit of their choice. There’s no other storage company that I know of that does something like that.”
Durham and her staff recently held their first “Garage Sale” fundraiser at the Pearl City location with proceeds designated to benefit the Pearl City Elementary School Choir to help offset expenses for the 2011-2012 school year.
“The garage sale was really awesome,” Durham said with a big smile. “It was wonderful. I was so excited about it. Everyone who came was really nice. People donated some really nice stuff. I was so impressed with their generosity. At the end of the day over $1300 dollars was raised for the Pearl City Elementary School Choir.”
The Pearl City Elementary School garage sale was an example of how Hawaii Self Storage employees can earn volunteer time while helping out the community for a worthy cause. Hawaii Self Storage employee Kimo, who works at the Pearl City location, came through in a big way for the Pearl City Elementary School choir members during the garage sale.
“Kimo helped out so much of his own time with this garage sale," Durham said. "I was really impressed. I was really pleased to see him clocking out and going to help with the garage sale stuff. That was so cool. I think it has a lot to do with the company’s program on how we encourage people to do volunteer work.”
Hawaii Self Storage in Hawaii is a strong supporter of our high school students who plan to attend college but may need financial assistance to reach their higher education goals. The company awards thousands of dollars each year to deserving students through their Hawaii Self Storage Scholarship Program.
“We also have a scholarship program that we do every year for the high school students,” Durham said about the company’s support for Hawaii high school students and their higher education goals. “For each high school we donate one scholarship. I believe it’s four of five hundred dollars per semester for the four years that they are in college to help them out towards their college education.”
Chaney Durham and her Pearl City Hawaii Self Storage team aspires to continue offering the best self storage services possible that in return allows the company to share their success by enhancing their “Community Pride” commitment to our Pearl City community and its residents.
“When people store with us, they’re storing with a company they know is out to help the community,” Chaney Durham.
Mahalo to Chaney Durham and Hawaii Self Storage in Pearl City for being a much appreciated friend and respected business in our community.
