Academia strong arms Leilehua over Pearl City 3-2

Cody Academia led the Leilehua Mules to an upset win over the Pearl City Chargers 3-2 in OIA Red Western Division Varsity Baseball played at Pearl City High School on Wednesday.

The Mules improve their record to 3-5 while the Chargers, who suffered their second loss in a row drop to 5-4.

Academia allowed three runs and nine hits in a complete game performance. Pearl City starting pitcher Sumi Pruett took the loss for the Chargers in five complete innings of work. Tyler Tokunaga pitched the sixth and seventh innings in relief or the Chargers. Pearl City pitchers held Leilehua to four hits in the game.

Ian Kaopua led Leilehua at the plate hitting 2-3. Pearl City leading hitters: Tyler Tokunaga 3B with 2 RBI; Reid Akau 2-3; Tyler Hazama 2-3, scored a run; Shaye Higa 2-3, scored a run.

Aaron Taoy reached first base after being beaned in the foot by Pearl City starting Sumi Pruett. Taoy advanced to second base on a pass ball at the plate. Next batter Bronson Ancheta-Maeda popped out to center field for out number two. Taoy stole third base and later scored on a pitch that sailed over the reach of Pearl City catcher Kamalu Neal.Next batter grounded out for the third out. The Mules went up 1-0 over the Chargers.

Tyler Hazama got on base after hitting hit a one out single pass the Leilehua shortstop. Next batter Shaye Higa stroked a single that moved Hazama into scoring position at second base and Higa at first. Jason Komoda popped out to centerfield for out number two. Tyler Tokunaga hit a drive down the right field line that bounced off the right fielder while attempting the catch allowing Hazama and Higa to score on the play. Tokunaga pulled into third base with a triple. The Chargers took a 2-1 lead over the Mules. Leilehua ended the Pearl City fourth inning rally on a ground out.

Top 5

Jordan Kameda led off the top of the fifth inning with a double. Joshua Lorenzo came in to pinch run for Kameda. Lorenzo scored on a bad throw from Pruett who came off the mound to field a bunt by Dadrian Ah Quin and misfired to first base. Ah Quin made it all the way around to third base on the play. Ah Quin scored the go ahead and winning run on a bunt by Albert Talaroc.

The Chargers return to the diamond, on the road, in a rematch with Leilehua at Fred Wright Field in Wahiawa on Saturday, April 7. First pitch is set for 10:00am.
