Mother Nature dumped just enough rain on yesterday's Pearl City Complex Track Meet held at Pearl City High School's Edwin "Bino" Neves Stadium to wash out the track and cancel the meet midway through the competition.
Pearl City Complex Principals called off the meet after about a fifteen minute emergency huddle near the official results tent manned by volunteers from the Pearl City Chargers track team. The decision was made to cancel the remainder of the scheduled track events due to safety concerns for student athletes.
What started out as puddling in the beginning of the meet, steadily grew to submerge large sections of the track as rain from the Koolau Mountains swept across the Pearl City High School campus.
Through it all, the rain didn't dampen the spirit of the track & field student athletes as they worked through the adversity and the challenge of doing their best while representing their respective schools.
Congratulations to Tashawn Brisco from Lehua Elementary School who set a meet record in the 6th grade Boys 50 meter Dash with a time of 7.40. Brisco beat the previous meet record time of 7.60 set by Ryan Sagayaga of Manana Elementary School in 2011.
Schools who participated at yesterday's Pearl City Complex Track Meet:
Kanoelani Elementary School, Lehua Elementary School, Manana Elementary School, Momilani Elementary School, Palisades Elementary School, Pearl City Highlands Elementary School, Pearl City Elementary School, and Waiau Elementary School.
Mahalo to Pearl City High School Principal Carlyn Fujimoto and her staff, Pearl City High School Athletic Director, Reid Shigemasa and his staff for an outstanding job hosting the event. Also, mahalo to the Pearl City Chargers track team for their superb volunteer efforts in running the track meet and for their dedication and commitment as mentors for the Pearl City Complex student athletes.
Finally, mahalo to the Pearl City Community Association for their sponsorship of the Participation, First, Second, and Third Place award ribbons.
Let's also wish good luck to the Chargers Varsity Boy's & Girl's Track Teams as they head off to compete in next weekend's HHSAA State Varsity Track & Field Championships on the Big Island.
