Pearl City Charger girls win 2012 state judo championship

The Pearl City Chargers Girls outscored three time defending state champion Punahou 71-58 to win the HHSAA State Girls Judo Championship Title on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center.

The Lady Chargers were led by team captain Sanoe Spencer who captured the title in the 220 lbs. weight division. It was Spencer's third championship title at 220 lbs.

Pearl City came close in knocking off Punahou last year but lost by two points for the championship. The Lady Chargers last state judo championship came in 2008.

Kapolei finished in third place yesterday behind Pearl City and Punahou with 47 points.

It was a an OIA sweep for the championship titles in both the Girl's and Boy's competition as the Moanalua Na Menehune captured the Boy's title finishing in first place in a close win over Mililani 58-52. Kamehameha – Kapalama finished third with 42 points.

The Charger Boys came across tough competition during Saturday's championship tournament. The team fought hard in every bout. The Chargers finishing tied for 22nd place. Michael Ishikawa had the highest finish for the Chargers placing 6th in the 121 lbs. weight division.

Congratulations to Pearl City Chargers Head Coach Robin Puahala and the Chargers coaching staff for a great job in guiding the Boy's and Girl's judo teams to an unforgettable 2012 season!

A special congratulations goes out to the Lady Chargers for winning team titles in both the OIA and HHSAA State Championship Tournaments.
