Pearl City eliminates Ewa Beach 7-1 from District 7 championship tourney

Pearl City got back on the winning track on Friday with a 7-1 victory over Ewa Beach in the loser's bracket of the 2012 District 7 Little League Majors Division Championship Tournament played at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP) in Waipio.

After suffering an 11-1 defeat on Thursday to MKH, Pearl City needed a win over Ewa Beach to stay alive in the double elimination format tournament which they accomplished. With the loss to Pearl City, Ewa Beach was eliminated.

The District 7 tournament  will take today off and resume play on Sunday. Pearl City will play the winner of Friday's match up between Waipahu/Waipio on Sunday at 9:00am.

On Friday, Pearl City's Brannon Liu and Nohea Hee both made huge contributions from the mound and at the plate in the win over Ewa Beach. Liu held Ewa Beach to five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work before being relieved in the bottom of the fifth inning by Hee with one out and two runners on base. Ewa Beach would score their only run of the ball game on a pass ball at the plate with Hee on the mound. Hee would shut down Ewa Beach the rest of the way.

At the plate Liu hit a 3-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning to give Pearl City a 3-0 lead. Liu and Hee played a big role in the four-run top of the sixth inning with  Liu leading off the inning with a double and would later score to put Pearl City up 4-1. Hee contributed with an RBI single and also scored the final run of the ball game.

Kanai Aglipay and Jamin Kalaola worked the hill for Ewa Beach in the loss to Pearl City.

Scoring Summary:

Top 4

In top of the fourth inning Caleb Young reached first base after being walked with one out. Carter Hirano hit a two out base hit to center field advancing Young to second base Hirano on first. Brannon Liu stepped up to the plate and blasted a 3-run homerun over the right field fence that drove in Young and Hirano. Next batter Davin Kapuras got on first base with an infield single.  Ewa Beach made a pitching change bringing in Jamin Kalaola in relief of Kanai Aglipay. Matthew Valencia came into the game to pinch run for Kapuras. Valencia advanced to second base on a pass ball at home plate. Kalaola walked Alihikaua Rodrigues. Next batter Jerick Nomura stroked a base hit. Valencia got caught in a rundown between third and home while attempting to score from second base on the play. Pearl City left one runner on base in the inning and took a 3-0 lead.

Bottom 5

Kekahi Reiny-Aloy led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to center field. Next batter Nicholas Sampson struck out for out number one.  Kobe Kaslow hit a single into left field. Reiny-Aloy advanced to second base. Pearl City made a pitching change bringing in Nohea Hee in relief of Brannon Liu. Next batter Makana Ontai popped out to right field for the second out of the inning. Reiny-Aloy advanced to third base on the play and would score on a pass ball at home plate.  The next batter grounded out to the pitcher for the third out. Pearl City 3-1.

Top 6

Brannon Liu led off the inning with a double to center field. Davin Kapuras grounded out for the first out of the inning. Alihikaua Rodrigues hit a grounder that got under the third baseman's glove and into left field. Liu scored from second base to put Pearl City up 4-1. Rodrigues made it to second base in scoring position. Next batter Jerick Nomura lined a single into right field advancing Rodrigues to third base. Pearl City had runners on first and third with one out. Nomura moved to second base on a steal. Christian Pacrem grounded out scoring Rodrigues from third base. Nomura advanced to third base on the groundout. Pearl City went up 5-1. Nohea Hee drilled an RBI single to center field scoring Nomura from third. Pearl City put run number six on the board. Next batter Sam Prentice reached first base on a bunt. Hee moved up to second base. Kahiau Anderson hit an RBI single that scored Hee from second base putting Pearl City up 7-1. Carter Hirano grounded out to the shortstop for the third out. Pearl City scored four runs on five hits in the inning.
