Chong’s 11 kills & 19 digs lifts Pearl City over Leilehua 2-1 on Senior Night

Sep 27, 2012 | PC Sports

Last night, Pearl City Lady Chargers volleyball fans honored a group of seniors on senior night, who in return delivered exciting victories in both the varsity and blue varsity matches against the visiting Leilehua Lady Mules.

Kaya Chong once again sparked the varsity team as they defeated the Lady Mules 23-25, 25-20 and 15-12. After dropping the first set, the Lady Chargers turned it on with Chong leading the way. Chong finished with 11 kills and 19 digs on the night. Teammate Kacie Chinen continued her steady play at her libero position with 10 digs for the match.

Lady Chargers Head Coach Kory Toyozaki was proud of her girls and how they fought back on Wednesday after dropping the first set to take control and go on to win sets two and three for the match.

"We're just really proud of the them," said Toyozaki. "After dropping the first set we just told them to settle down.  We know that it's senior night and our last home game and everybody had their adrenalin flying so we just needed to calm them down. They're starting to peek now and we're really proud of how they're playing."

The Lady Chargers finish out the regular season against Waianae on Saturday. They are currently in second place with a record of 7-2 behind Mililani who is undefeated and in first place in the OIA Red Western Division.

The Lady Chargers need a win over Waianae to stay in position for a top two seed and a first round bye in the upcoming OIA Red Division Varsity Girls Volleyball Playoffs and Championship Tournament which begins in the first week of October. Leilehua and Campbell are in third place with 6-3 league records and will square off against each other on Saturday.

MyPearlCity would like to say Aloha to the Lady Chargers Senior Class and wish them all the best as they end the regular season and head towards the OIA playoffs.
