Pearl City Chargers head coaches (front row) Millie Gomes (Girls) and James Hayashi (Boys) pose with the Chargers Boys and Girls 2012 Billy Tees / HHSAA State Bowling Championship teams at Kauai Bowl in Lihue on Friday, November 2, 2012.

The Charger boys team pulled off a three-peat performance on Friday after also winning state titles in 2010 and 2011. The boys out distanced runner-up Mililani by 878 pins with a total pin count of 8,792 to the Trojans 7,914.

The Boys team received strong pin count support from Nicholas Azumi (3rd), Ken Hayase-Fong (7th), Sheldon Naauao (13th), and Ryan Kajihiro (20th) who all placed in the top 20.

The Lady Chargers repeated as state champions with a dominating performance over second place finisher Mililani 7,761 to 7,264. The Lady Chargers won by 497 pins.

Ashlyn-Rae Castro (3rd), Brianna Nakamura (4th), Alera Chock (6th), Kristin Frost (12), and Chelsi Morishige (19), powered the Lady Chargers to a team top 20 finish.

Lady Chargers Head Coach Millie Gomes spoke of her girls coming together this season with a mixture of experienced, senior leadership and a freshman class that stepped right into the starting line-up.

"I'm so proud of them and how they worked together all season long through the OIA and state championships," said Coach Gomes. "We talked about the seniors going out on top as well and the need for our underclassmen, which includes a sophomore, to step up and learn from them. They did, and everything came together."

The Pearl City High School bowling program is passionate about recognizing the support from parents who play an instrumental role in cultivating and perpetuating its winning program.

"We get 125% support from our parents," Gomes said. "They never question when we need help with something. They're awesome! The kids have to buy their own bowling balls and most of them have three balls that cost about $200 to $300. They also have to buy their own equipment and uniforms. It comes from the parents. If I don't have their support,  I don't have a team. I would also like to recognize and say mahalo to our parent representative Yolanda Nakamura. She does so much. Yolanda keeps all the stats from every single practice and all of our games. She also keeps all the parents informed. Whatever the team needs, she's there."

Coach Gomes also wanted to recognize the Pearl City High School Athletic Department for their support of the Chargers championship boys and girls bowling programs.

"The Pearl City High School Athletic Department has been very supportive with regards to taking care of the teams," Coach Gomes said. "A.D. Reid Shigemasa is the bowling coordinator and he does an excellent job every year."

Congratulations to Head Coaches Millie Gomes and James Hayashi and the awesome 2012 Pearl City Chargers HHSAA State Bowling Championship teams!
