MyPearlCity.com is honored to recognize the student body of Our Lady of Counsel School in Pearl City for their exceptional commitment to their school, church, community and families.

Besides excelling in the classroom, the students from Pre-School 3 through the Eighth grade are committed to serving their community as well as communities in need throughout the world.

Our Lady of Good Counsel School Principal Mrs. Cindy Olaso is proud of her student’s efforts to reach out and directly impact those in need through community service projects that make a difference in so many lives each year. Principal Olaso is in her eighteenth year at the helm of the school and has played an integral role in guiding the students reach and participation in community service projects.

"We do service projects here locally in the community," said Principal Olaso. "We also try to do nationally and international as well.  We've done some things with a family group in the Philippines. Nationally we do American Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services when there are big disasters out there. We do something every month. Locally we help the Food Pantry. We've gone to the homeless shelter in Kakaako and some of our students also go out to Waikiki. There's a Saturday project for the homeless that they participate in every now and then. The students put together care packages and we'll provide food for them  to serve. The students talk story with the people out there and also play with the kids."

Together, the students and their families share in the experience of giving while building upon their faith and appreciation for what they have and hope to continue to give.

"It becomes an eye opener for them and their families as well because when we go off campus, the parents have to come with them," Principal Olson said. It’s an eye opener for the entire family. I think it helps the families share the information to their children that they are blessed. They are blessed by God and that they are able to have the things that they are able to have, and come to a school that is safe, and able to teach them some of these messages. The students ask us all the time when are they going back because they've had a positive experience. Right before Christmas we went out, we made toiletries packages and brought breakfast with our seventh and eighth graders and their families. We had so many kids and so many packages. They felt like they were Santa's Elves because they were leaving little bags by some of the people who were still sleeping because we got there so early. The kids really enjoy giving back. It's putting our faith into action and that's important."

Principal Olaso is blessed with a staff that has been with her for many years. They work hard and continue to improve the school with their dedication, pride, and ability to work with new hires to implement their ideas into the curriculum.

"We have one of the greatest faculties on the island," Principal Olaso said with pride in her heart. "They are committed. I don't have much turnover so we have the stability. We have the continuity. The new ones that we have come with great ideas. We listen to them and we try to implement some of them. They only strengthen what we have."

The bond between the students, classmates, and their teachers is something that they will carry with them as they face their futures.  The desire to return to the OLGC comfort zone for a visit is a common occurrence and truly appreciated.

"It's one of those priceless things that we get, and the teachers get, when they come back and visit," Principal Olaso said. "Starting from the new freshmen in high school. They'll come back and say we miss here. We miss going to church. We miss the family atmosphere where everybody knows your name. We have several generations that have come through our school and that's always nice to see that they bring their children back."

OLGC students have learned from an early age the meaning of Christian values and how their faith plays an important role in their daily lives.

"We are a Christ centered environment where the whole child is growing, academically as well as spiritually and emotionally. We're giving them opportunities to learn about themselves and learn about their community and that they are one important part. It's about getting them to open up, and it’s not only about me, it’s about other people."

Our Mission

The mission of Our Lady of Good Counsel School is to create a Christ centered environment that offers a firm foundation in basic education, and emphasizes the dignity and self worth of the person in relation to God, family, school, and community.

What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers

Our Founding Fathers wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America. These are set of laws for our country. It explained what are the rights and responsibilities of our government.  The Bill of Rights in the Constitution was also added so that the rights of the American people will also and always be protected.  I would like to say that I am very grateful to them for creating this for the benefit of not only our country, but also for each and every citizens of the United States of America.  Our Founding Fathers must have loved our country so much that they would take the time to gather together to make these laws so that our country will run peacefully and for people to have their rights protected.  Thank you so much for looking out for us, the citizens of this great nation.

There were many laws and rights written by our Founding Fathers, but there are two that I am most thankful for.  I am very grateful for the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.  This amendment is about being able to say or write anything we want, even if we have any complaints about the government, we will not be put to jail.  This amendment also included the right to follow any religion we choose.  If this wasn’t included, I will not be able to go to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church to pray and practice my faith.    The second one I am grateful for is the right of women to vote.  I may not be able to vote now, but as a woman, I know that I will be able to vote when I turn 18 years old and choose who I would like to run this country.

In conclusion, I am very happy that our Founding Fathers created The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights for all of us.  Even if these laws and rights were made many years ago, it is still working for all of us today and we will always be protected by them.
