Resolution to rename Manana Neighborhood Park to “Shige Ushiro Manana Neighborhood Park”

There is currently a resolution being presented to the Honolulu City Council that if passed, will rename Manana Neighborhood Park to "Shige Ushiro Manana Neighborhood Park". Community organizers are asking the public to testify or submit written testimony in favor of honoring long-time community volunteer Mr. Shige Ushiro with the renaming of the park. Final approval of the Resolution is scheduled at the regular City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, 10 a.m. at Leeward Community College.

Shige Ushiro dedicated his years as a Pearl City resident to serving his community before his passing on June 18, 2010. Mr. Ushiro moved into the new Manana subdivision in 1968. He had a 31-year career as a public school educator and retired as the Principal of Highlands Intermediate School in Pearl City where he served from 1974 to 1986.

Mr. Ushiro was a founding member and first President of the Manana Community Association, a neighborhood organization that encourages fellowship and community participation.

He was a long-time Board member of the Pearl City Community Association, which has the stated objective to promote the health and welfare of the entire Pearl City community. 

Mr. Ushiro was also a co-founder and served as a Board member and treasurer of the
Pearl City Foundation, a non-profit organization with the stated purpose to strengthen
and enrich the Pearl City community as manifested through the multi-use Momilani
Community Center.

The following information was provided by Robert Sato, Legislative Aide to Councilmember Breene Harimoto:

 

Final approval of the Resolution is scheduled at the Regular City
Council meeting on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, 10 a.m., Leeward
Community College, Room (Undetermined).

Persons wishing to testify on the morning calendar are requested to
register by 10 a.m. as follows:

a. On‑Line at http://www.honolulu.gov/council/attnspkccl.htm;

b. By faxing to 768-3826 your name, phone number and subject matter;

c. By filling out the registration form in person; or

d. By calling 768-3813.

Persons who have not registered to testify by 10 a.m., will be given
an opportunity to speak on an item following oral testimonies of the
registered speakers.

Each speaker shall not have anyone else read their statement and is
limited to:

a. three-minute presentation on New Business and Sunshined items;

b. one-minute presentation on all other items.

WRITTEN TESTIMONY

Written testimony may be faxed to 768-3826 or e-mailed at
http://www.honolulu.gov/council/emailccl.htm by Tuesday, August 6, 2013
for distribution at the Aug 7 meeting.
