Pearl City pulled even at 1-1 in the OIA Varsity Football White Division after defeating the visiting Waialua Bulldogs 38-12 last night at Edwin "Bino" Neves Stadium on the campus of Pearl City High School.
Pearl City starting QB Jordan Taamu led the Charger offense passing for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Taamu also picked up 56 yards on the ground.
Taamu connected with Timothy Rivera on a 7 yard touchdown pass to take an early 6-0 first quarter lead. Taamu also hit Kierren McGhee on a 52 yard touchdown pass and Justin Dupio on a 35 yard touchdown toss.
Waialua's Xavier Repollo brought Bulldog fan base to their feet with an 85 yard kick off return that answered the Chargers first score of the ball game on the ensuing kick off that tied the game at 6-6.
The Chargers offense and defense played well much to the satisfaction of head coach Robin Kami who notched his first regular season career win as the skipper of the Chargers varsity football program.
"This feels good," said Kami. "These kids came a long way. The hard work they put in the school now kind of trickled down to the field. The defense tonight played very well and the offense helped us out too. Both sides of the ball played well and the special teams too. It feels really good to have that first victory under our belt. Hopefully many more to come."
Pearl City outgained Waialua in total net offense 354-140. Pearl City put up 201 yards through the air to Waialua's 60. The Chargers won the ground game 153 – 80.
Kierren McGhee led the Chargers in receiving with 52 yards and a touchdown.
Jordan Taamu gained 56 yards on the ground to lead the Chargers. Taamu also also scored on a two point conversion attempt.
Looks like the Chargers have a bit of momentum on their side after last night's convincing win over the Bulldogs. The Chargers will need to carry that momentum this Friday against the Kalaheo Mustangs at Kailua High School.
