Labasan’s no-hit, 6-0 shutout win over Pearl City advances Maryknoll to state tourney quarterfinals

Maryknoll ace Shearyna Labasan tossed a no-hit, 6-0 shutout against Pearl City on Tuesday in the opening round of the HHSAA State Division I Softball Championships played at University of Hawaii Manoa Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

Labasan struck out fourteen batters with three walks in seven complete innings for the Lady Spartans. Pearl City starting pitcher Kristin Frost took the loss allowing six runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Through four and a half innings Labasan and Frost dualed holding their opponents hitless and scoreless until the Lady Spartans broke the game wide open in the bottom fifth inning scoring six runs on three hits and a couple errors. Jerae Keliikoa led off the bottom of the inning with a single to center field. Miki Takara came in the game as a courtesy runner for Keliikoa at first base. Next batter Kasey Magadaro walked putting runners on first and second with no outs. Chynna Mekaru entered the game as a courtesy runner for Magadaro at first.  Mylee Enos reached first base on a throwing error that scored Takara. Enos stole second base. Shayna Ige reached first base on throwing error by Lady Chargers shortstop Robi Kami that scored Mekaru. Enos advanced to third. Ige stole second base. Next batter Erica Inagaki reached first base on a fielder's choice. Next batter Tamia Hirano hit an RBI single to center field scoring Enos. With the bases loaded, Bree Soma stepped up to the plate and blasted a three RBI triple to left field that put the Lady Spartans up 6-0.

Labasan struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning to end the game and earn the no hitter win.

Pearl City missed a couple opportunities to score in the game leaving a runner on base in both the second and fifth innings.

The Lady Spartans move on to the championship tournament quarterfinals to face Oahu Interscholastic Association Champion and #2 seed Mililani at 7:00pm at Rainbow Wahine Stadium. Pearl City will play in the consolation bracket against Moanalua at 11:00am. Moanalua lost to Mid Pacific 7-1 yesterday in a first round match-up.
