Pearl City Hongwanji 2014 Obon Festival

Pearl City Hongwanji held their annual Obon Bon Dance Festival on Saturday, August 9 at the Pearl City Hongwanji Mission. Saturday's event swelled with attendees due to Friday night's Hatsubon Service and Bon Dance being canceled due to Tropical Storm Eselle. The Pearl City Hongwanji Obon Festival traditionally is a two-day (Friday-Saturday) event held in early August.

Obon season is a very meaningful time to remember our loved ones who have passed away before us, and time to reflect on our lives.

In Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition, Obon is called "Kangi-e" which means "Gathering of Joy" in the Light of Compassion of Amida Buddha.

Bon Odori Dance is the way of expressing our appreciation and joy of life in the Buddha's compassion.
