Pearl City Elementary School students “Welcomed Back” with “Top Rank” surprise!

Pearl City Elementary School (PCES) Principal Dr. Susan Hirokane, along with the school faculty and staff, "Welcomed Back" the PCES student body in an assembly held on Monday, August 25 in the school cafeteria.

The students were pleasantly surprised to hear that their 2013-2014 Hawaii State Assessment test scores in reading and math for students in grades 4-6 ranked them as the #1 elementary school in the Pearl City / Waipahu District Complex. The school scored a combined total of 343 points out of a possible 400 points.

"We are very proud of their progress," said Principal Dr. Susan Hirokane. "Also for trying hard to keep up the focus no matter where you're at. Just try hard, keep trying hard. They progressed because of a lot of tutoring and the kids had to learn their online programs better. How to navigate which feature and function, and keep mindful on where to improve."

PCES also recognized community volunteers who helped out with school improvement projects during last school year and through the summer. Kiewit Building Group who provided supplies, design, and manpower for the construction of the school's new outdoor amphitheater that will be used for the lower grades to hold storytelling and musical performances throughout the school year.

Former Pearl Community Association President Mr. Warren Hiromoto was recognized for his groups volunteer work in the construction of the school's new maintenance storage rooms located near the cafeteria.

Principal Dr. Susan Hirokane also had the honor of introducing and welcoming back former PCES Principal Mr. Howard Humphreys to the assembly. Mr. Humphreys retired from PCES in 2002. He was impressed with the progress the school has made while working together as a team. Teamwork played an integral role in the success of PCES under his leadership at the school.

"It's remarkable that the school is still very much working as a team ," said Mr. Humphreys. "Susan's carried on from what we were doing 12 years ago and she went beyond that. The staff still works as a team with the community and the students are very engaged. You can tell that they are really happy to come to school and that's what you look for in a learning environment."
