Students from Pearl City High School’s Culinary Arts class will cook for health at a “Cooking Show-Off” during the health fair at Momilani Farmer’s Market, Friday, November 21, 2014, at 5 PM. The students will demonstrate how to create healthy dishes using local produce from the Momilani Farmer's Market. This exciting, educational event is in support of American Diabetes Month® and is presented by US Med Urgent Care.

Shawn Kimball, Culinary Arts Instructor at Pearl City High School remarks, “The students are excited to learn healthy cooking and to try something new. They are especially looking forward to cooking in front of people at the ‘Cooking Show-Off’!”

One of the primary objectives of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is to raise awareness and understanding of diabetes, its consequences, management and prevention. Leslie Lam, Executive Director ADA, Hawaii, states, “November is American Diabetes Month®, a time to communicate the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of diabetes prevention and control.  The American Diabetes Association has used this month as an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and its serious complications that affect over 497,800 individuals who have diabetes and prediabetes here in Hawaii.  We are thrilled to see the collaboration between Momilani Farmer’s Market and Pearl City High School Culinary Art students as they engage in healthy cooking activities using fresh ingredients!”

Every month, US Med Urgent Care sponsors the health fair at the Momilani Farmer’s Market where staff provides free blood pressure checks, free medication and blood pressure wallet cards, and educates attendees about health issues including how to know when to go to the ER. Donna Schmidt, CEO of US Med Urgent Care remarks, “Our philosophy of care is to reach individuals, families and groups by being woven into the fabric of our communities.  The integration of the Pearl City Foundation, Pearl City High School Culinary Arts students, Momilani Farmer’s Market and US Med Urgent Care creates a great blend of relationships that supports multiple aspects of health in our community.  By engaging young people and their families with our ‘Cooking Show-Off’, we are bringing a vital message of healthy eating to the community in support of American Diabetes Month®.  Through education, engagement and intervention, we can curb the progression of the disease, improve quality of life and do our share to bring down the high cost of healthcare.”

The Momilani Farmer’s Market is held every Friday from 3 to 7 PM at 715 Hoomoana Street, Pearl City, HI 96782. The “Cooking Show-Off” starts at 5 PM.
