The Momilani Fit Factory is an after school fitness program designed to teach students about the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle.  The Fit Factory was founded in 2009 and was originally designed as a third grade only program led by third grade teacher Mr. Masaru Uchino.  However, in 2010, the Fit Factory was expanded to include the Momilani fourth grade students as well when fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Dawn Kanoho, joined the coaching staff of the group.

The Fit Factory is open to all current third and fourth grade students at Momilani with a limited enrollment period at the beginning of each school year.  Fit Factory members are required to make a 100% commitment to the group’s meetings throughout the entire school year, following a strict attendance policy and rules contract.  As a year-long program, the Fit Factory meets twice a week, rain or shine, from the beginning of the school year in August to the end of the school year in May.

The Fit Factory group’s main goal revolves around the concept of discovering one’s individual ability level.  Each member is encouraged to compete against their own self, rather than to focus on competing against other students.  Each member of the Fit Factory is treated as a team member, and a positive team mentality is emphasized at every group workout.

There is no cost to join the Fit Factory, but students are given the option to purchase a team t-shirt which is designed each year exclusively for the Momilani Fit Factory.  Students are also encouraged to participate in any of up to six different public running events such as, The Great Aloha Run and Keiki Run, The Honolulu 5K for Kids, and The Jamba Juice Banana Man Chase 5K.  Students who participate in any of the running events are required to pay for their own registration fees, however, many of the fees are returned to Momilani as donations from the event organizations.  To date, the Momilani Fit Factory has helped to raise thousands of dollars to help support our school’s health and wellness curriculum and events.
