Pearl City looked impressive, and a bit overpowering in last night’s 17-6 win over Waipahu in OIA D1 West varsity softball action played at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP) in Waipo that ended after six complete innings due the 10-run rule.
It was the second meeting between the two teams during the 2015 regular season that Pearl City has beaten Waipahu by 10 or more runs.
Pearl City jumped on Waipahu in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Waipahu answered back in the bottom of the inning with a five run rally to take a 5-4 lead. Pearl City starting pitcher Tyanna Kaaialii was pulled by Lady Chargers head coach Chad Obara for Kristin Frost who took over with three runs across in the inning.
The Lady Chargers remained cool and went to work, scoring six runs in the top of the second inning to take a 10-5 lead. Pearl City scored one run in the third, four runs in the fourth, and two runs in sixth inning to post their most productive run total (17) so far in the regular season.
The Lady Marauders avoided the 10-run rule being implemented in the bottom of fifth inning on a solo homerun blast over the center field fence by Shevan DeFreitas. Waipahu trailed Pearl City 15-6.
The Lady Chargers moved ahead by 11 runs at 17-6 on a 2-RBI ground-rule double to left field by Haley-Alexis Yamaguchi in the top of the sixth inning.
Pearl City’s Kristin Frost earned the win for the Lady Chargers in six innings of relief work for starting pitcher Tyanna Kaaialii. Frost allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Waipahu starting pitcher Rayna Abunag allowed ten runs on four hits with no strikeouts and two walks in two innings of work. Gracie Kaopua pitched four innings in relief of Abunag allowing seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Pearl City improved to 5-2-1 while Waipahu is 1-6 in league play.
