The amazing Pearl City Lady Chargers captured their 6th Oahu Interscholastic Association Girls Team Judo Championship in a row on Saturday, May 2, at Moanalua High School.
The Lady Chargers defeated Roosevelt 55-40 in the championship finals. The win set a school record of six consecutive OIA Girls Team Judo Championship Titles. Head Coach Robin Puahala and his Lady Chargers entered the 2015 OIA Judo Team Championships tied with former Lady Chargers Head Coaches Ivan Yoshimura and Steven Ohara who led their teams to five consecutive OIA championship titles from 1977-1981.
“6-Peat, you know that’s pretty crazy," said Lady Chargers Head Coach Robin Puahala, Jr. "It was a record set by Ivan Yoshimura, Steven Ohara, former head coaches at Pearl City High School, along with Kevin Asano, the Olympic Silver Medalists. They set this record way back in 1977 all the way to 1981. No other team has got close to beating it but this team here with a 6-PEAT. It was something we wanted on our senior prom night. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
“I’m glad that we won our title and we broke the record, said senior Kayelah Arakaki. "We made everyone proud. As a team, we all accomplished what we wanted to do, and we did it!”
“I’m really proud of everybody, and they did really good," said Mana Borden, Lady Chargers 2015 OIA 172 Lbs. Individual Champion. "It’s our team that accomplished everything.”
