Potent ground game powers Pearl City past Roosevelt 14-7

The Pearl City Chargers turned to their ground game to defeat Roosevelt 14-7 last night in their Oahu Interscholastic Association Division Division 2 regular season opener played at Roosevelt High School's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Pearl City pounded out 313 yards of offense on the ground with Charger junior running back Joe Maneafaiga leading the way picking up 204 yards on 22 carries.

"Joe did a great job of running the ball and the O-line did a great job of blocking tonight, said Chargers Head Coach Robin Kami."

Sophomore QB Isaiah Asinsin stepped in for Chargers starting QB Kekainalu Simon who is recovering from a shoulder injury.

"Isaiah also did a great job tonight, Kami said. "He was nervous in the beginning but calmed down in the second half and led the team to a strong finish".

Coach Kami was pleased with the performance of his defense that held Roosevelt to 67 yards through the air, 29 rushing yards and one touchdown.

"Our defense, again, every year they help us out and always keep us in the ball game to the fourth quarter."

Pearl City scored first on a 27 yard touchdown run by Isiah (Tala) Moeone with :28 seconds on the clock in the first quarter. Zameer Khan converted the PAT to go up 7-0. Moeone finished the game with 59 yards on 6 carries and one touchdown.

Roosevelt tied the game at 7-7 at 10:28 OF the second quarter on a 13 yard touchdown pass from QB Shastyn Kekahuna to Shayne Teruya and a successful PAT kick from Dillon Yamamoto.

Pearl City scored the go ahead touchdown on a 4 yard run touchdown run by Alosina Toomalatai with 8:49 left on the game clock in the fourth quarter. Zameer Khan converted the PAT to go up 14-7.

Pearl City returns to action, at home, on Saturday, August 22 against Waialua. Junior Varsity kicks off at 4:00pm with the varsity scheduled to play 30 minutes after the junior varsity conclusion.

Roosevelt takes on Radford at Aiea High School on Saturday, August 22. Junior Varsity contest is scheduled for 4:00pm with the varsity to follow.
