An $18,000 contribution from Hawaiian Electric to the Friends of the Library of Hawaiʻi will be shared among six Friends groups supporting the Ewa Beach, Pearl City, Kahuku, Kapolei, Waiʻanae and Waimanalo public library branches. The Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i and their local Friends affiliate groups help to maintain free public libraries in the State of Hawaiʻi. The funds will be used for the purchase of additional library materials and facilitating literacy programs for the enrichment of these communities.

“Private support by Hawaiian Electric and other organizations and individuals are essential for funding the additional needs and expansion of the public libraries not covered by the library budget,” said Nainoa Mau, executive director of the Friends of the Library of Hawaiʻi.

Funding sources include book sales, donations, fundraiser events, membership dues and sponsors which help to provide reading programs, storytelling, music performances, preschool story times, cultural events, author talks, informational seminars and more, for the community.

Founded in 1879 by Honolulu’s business leaders, merchants, and Hawaiian royalty, the Friends of the Library of Hawaiʻi exists to promote and support Hawaiʻi’s public libraries. To learn more, become a member or volunteer, or to make a donation, please visit www.friendsofthelibraryofhawaii.org.
