The Pearl City Shopping Center Merchants Association is proud to announce financial contributions recently made to three Pearl City District Complex Schools on Friday, January 15, 2016. I had the honor of joining Sheri Rolf from the PCSC Merchants Association Board to present donations to Pearl City Elementary School, Highlands Intermediate School, and Pearl City High School Athletics.
The three schools representing Pearl City Complex elementary, intermediate, and high school were presented the following Pearl City Shopping Center financial donations at their school campuses:
Pearl City Highlands Elementary – Science and Robotics Program
10 – $100.00 Pearl City Shopping Center Gift Certificates
Highlands Intermediate School – Science and Robotics Program
$500.00
Pearl City High School Athletics
$500.00
Both Pearl City Highlands Elementary and Highlands Intermediate School are award winners in science and robotics competition at the state and national levels and are currently preparing their teams to compete in state and national competition in the next few months. A team from Highlands Intermediate School recently swept the awards podium in the state middle school VEX competition held last weekend at Stevenson Intermediate School.
The Pearl City High School athletics program continued their success during the fall 2015 competition calendar winning OIA and state team and individual championship titles in girls & boys bowling and girl’s air riflery.
The students truly represent their schools with intelligence, creativity, pride, and with the Aloha spirit while here in Hawaii and in national competition. The entire 10 schools that make up the Pearl City District Complex are exceptional in their talents, academic rankings, and contributions to our Pearl City community.
The Pearl City Shopping Center is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Pearl City District Complex through its annual financial assistance program that benefits the students and the schools they attend.
Pearl City Highlands Elementary School
Mr. Michael Nakasato, Principal
“Thank you to the Pearl City Shopping Center for the donation. Luckily the kids qualified for nationals. We’re going to be flying up to San Diego at the end of May, but unfortunately we need money. We’re going to take these certificates and go down to the Pearl City Shopping Center because we’re planning a spaghetti fundraiser dinner night to turn these thousand dollars into something bigger to make sure all our kids can fly up to the mainland."
Amelie, 6th grade
“I feel like this team has been through a lot of ups and downs, but I think the downs really helped us. Yah, we’ve had a lot of those, but instead of pretending to be like the happy team, sharing your experience, like bad experiences and how it made you a stronger team is actually better.”
Yoshino, 6th grade
“Our team is really special because we’re an independent team. We mostly did everything ourselves. Like what Emily said, we had a lot of ups and downs, but we learned from our mistakes. Going to compete on the mainland I’m scared and excited because we might have been really good at states, but there are a lot of good teams at the nationals too.”
Taylor, 6th grade
“Another thing that makes our team special is that most teams just have two people that are up on the board, like when they do the robot part and the rest are like cheerleaders usually. With our team, we make sure that every single person in the group gets to go up and have a chance to speak and have a part in this team because they are a part of this team.”
Evan, 6th grade
“I think our team is special. Like Emily said, we are very independent. Our team is all full of returnees, and I think since they put all great minds on one team, we can do really great at nationals. I’m really excited to go to nationals because I’ve never gone anywhere else for competition with my school before.”
Kai, 5th grade
“Being a part of the team is really hard because I’m the only fifth grader on my team. It’s hard to cooperate with other sixth graders that have been on the team before. This year has been really fun working with my teammates. I feel super excited and happy to be on the team."

Mrs. Amy Martinson, Principal
“We’re a STEM school. Ms. Joan Okai and Ms. Kathy Lin are our robotics coaches. The students excel because they love it, and many of them want to become scientists or engineers, mathematicians or technology experts. To run a STEM program it takes quite a bit of money for the material and to develop robotics, and to just to buy those nuts and bolts. I think the Pearl City Shopping Center donation will really come in handy for the teachers."
Trent Domingo, 7th grade
(Represented 60 students in the science and robotics club and 20 students from the VEX club)
“It’s really fun; it’s really mostly hands on. Miss Lynn always pushes us to do the things we need to do and be the best at them."

Pearl City High School Athletics
Pearl City High School Athletic Director Mr. Reid Shigemasa
“The Pearl City High Athletic Department is very fortunate to have the Pearl City Shopping Center (PCSC) supporting our student athletes every year. The PCSC donation of $500 is beneficial to defray expenses in bus transportation and equipment purchases. Our coaches, athletes and their families work hard to keep each sport self-sufficient by means of fundraising, and many times taking money out of their own pockets. It's great to have our community business owners go out of their way to think about our high school athletes. The Pearl City High School Athletic Department would like to thank PCSC for their generous donation and wish them a prosperous new year!”
