Pearl City stops Campbell 8-3, moves to 8-0 in league play

Pearl City kept up their undefeated (8-0) momentum of knocking down Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division opponents after defeating the Campbell Sabers 8-3 on Wednesday in league play at Pearl City High School. It was the second win this  season over the defending 2015 OIA and state champions.

The second round match-up between the Chargers and Sabers turned out to be a slugfest with both teams pounding out eleven hits at the plate. Shane Shimizu 3-4, Run, Jordan Macias 3-4, Todd Takahama 2-4, accounted for eight of the Sabers hits.

Trestan Nakamura 1-2, triple, Run and Colby Hirano 1-2, double, 2 Runs powered their way at the plate for the Chargers. Sam Prentice 2-4, RBI, Run and Matt Yokota 3-4, RBI, Run, had very productive, run scoring at bats for the Chargers.

Pearl City's Trenton Darley earned the win in six complete innings of work on the hill for the Chargers. Darley gave up all eleven of the Sabers hits, but allowed only two runs with two strikeouts. Cade Halemanu closed it out to earn the save pitching one complete inning, allowing one earned run on no hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Halemanu made a much anticipated appearancefor the Chargers. It was his first 2016 regular season action for the sophomore right hander.

Campbell starting pitcher Dylan Florentin took the loss for the Sabers pitching 1/3 of an inning while allowing five runs on six hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Jamin Kalaola and Markus Ramos pitched the rest of the ball game in relief for the Sabers.

Campbell scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Charger bats answered back jumping on the Sabers with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. Pearl City snuffed out a bases loaded top of the second inning after Darley struck out Campbell's Justin Fernandez to end the Sabers scoring threat.

The Sabers picked up single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. The Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pad their lead.

The Chargers will take their 8-0 record up against Aiea (3-4) on Friday, April 1, 3:00pm at Pearl City High School.

Kaleb Nishijo slammed a RBI single to right field in the bottom of the first inning that

scored Matt Yokota from third base to put the Chargers up 4-1. Christian Onomura hustled

in on the play scoring from second base to take a 5-1 lead after one complete inning.
