The Pearl City Lady Chargers made it look easy as they took out #4 Waiakea 14-0 after five innings behind a no-hitter performance and a 12 hit assault in the quarterfinals of the 2016 HHSAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament played on Wednesday at UH Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Lady Chargers will face 2016 Oahu Interscholastic Association Champion Kapolei in tonight’s nightcap of the championship tournament semifinals. Kapolei defeated Leilehua 5-0 in their quarterfinal match-up Wednesday afternoon. Mililani and Campbell will meet in the first game of the semifinal doubleheader on Thursday at 4:30pm. Pearl City vs. Kapolei will follow at 7:00pm Mililani defeated Maui 6-0 while Campbell beat the defending state champion Kamehameha-Kapalama Lady Warriors 8-0 to advance to the semifinals. It will be an all OIA Western Division line-up in both semifinal contests. Winners will advance to the state championship tournament title game on Friday, May 13, 7:00pm at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Pearl City's Tyanna Kaaialii and Kristin Frost combined for the no-hit, 14-0 shut-out win over Waiakea. Kaaialii pitched one complete inning allowing no hits, no runs with three strikeouts. Frost pitched four complete innings allowing no runs, no hits, with seven strikeouts.
Kristi Hirata took the loss for the Waiakea Lady Warriors. Hirata pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing 12 runs, 10 hits, with no strikeouts and 5 walks. Jourdan Perreria and Alyssa Hara pitched in relief for Waiakea.
The Lady Charger bats didn’t show any signs of cooling off after Tuesday’s first round 8-4, 13 hit win over Iolani. The Lady Chargers have out hit their opponents so far in the state championship tournament 25-6 and have also outscored their opponents 22-6.
Hope Casarez followed her 2-4, HR, RBI performance in the win over Iolani with a 2-3, double, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored performance against Waiakea.
