Pearl City's Sunshine Fontes scored the winning goal early in the second half that broke a 0-0 tie to defeat OIA East champion and previously unbeaten Moanaula 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2017 Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Girls Soccer Championship Playoffs on Thursday at Castle High School.
The Lady Chargers win sets up a rematch for the 2017 OIA DI Championship on Saturday with OIA West Champion Mililani. The Lady Trojans defeated OIA East runner-up Castle 2-1 on Thursday in the first game of the doubleheader semifinals played at Castle High School to advance to the championship final. Pearl City will have the opportunity to avenge a loss to Mililani at last year's OIA DI Championship title match as well as a 3-1 loss during the 2016-2017 regular season.
In last night's win, Sunshine Fontes drilled in the winning goal from around 5 yards out off a long, 40 yard drive from Piper Collado. The Lady Chargers win was truly a collective effort as everyone contributed in the win while playing their hearts out from every position. Moanalua received a gutty performance from goalie Alexis Davis who saved 12 shots on goal by the hard charging and aggressive Lady Chargers scoring attack led by heavy hitters Daelenn Tokunaga (OIA DI leading scorer with 18 goals) Randi Fontes and younger sister Sunshine Fontes.
Saturday night's OIA DI Championship Final between defending state champion Pearl City (9-2-1) and defending OIA champion Mililani (10-0-2) will follow the 5:00pm OIA DII Championship Final between Waiahu and Kalaheo at Castle High School.
