Oahu Church of Christ, HOPE Worldwide O’ahu Chapter

MyPearlCity.com would like to recognize a very special and dedicated group of community volunteers representing the Oahu Church of Christ, HOPE Worldwide O'ahu Chapter. Waiau Elementary School became the direct beneficiary of Oahu Church of Christ’s efforts in serving the community in January in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Dozens of church members volunteered, along with volunteers from Waiau Elementary and local businesses, to offer their help and resources in beautifying the Waiau Elementary School grounds.

Volunteers cleaned and trimmed the school's landscaping, painted parking lot lines and curbs, and filled in sidewalks and walkways with concrete. Waiau Elementary School Principal Troy Takazono was truly grateful for the volunteers who participated in the school work day that served to bring the community and school together while benefitting the teachers, staff, and students at Waiau Elementary.

Troy Takazono, Principal, Waiau Elementary School

“We have some volunteers here on our campus doing some concrete work, doing some clean-up, painting the parking lot lines. They’re volunteers from the Oahu Church of Christ and they approached us at Waiau and said they wanted to help us out on Martin Luther King Day and I said great, we’ll be here, we’ll have refreshments and we appreciate what they’re doing. Their help is very important. Our school serves the community and we try to be that place where people can come, and we’re open about it, but when the community comes in and helps, it gives the teachers that added boost where we’re working together and it helps with the momentum and just encourages us, it’s awesome. We try and focus on the front of the school so when the parents and the students come back, they can see it right away and many of them will ask did you do all this? We can share with them about the volunteers who came in and they appreciate it.”

Members from the Oahu Church of Christ committed to serving both Waiau Elementary in Pearl City and Honowai Elementary in Waipahu in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Church member and HPD Officer Kevin Ancog was proud of the amount of work that was completed and the turnout from church volunteers.

We’re working on our benevolent arm of the Church of HOPE Worldwide. What it is is an actual day of service for Martin Luther King at Waiau Elementary as well as Honowai Elementary to do a beautification project. Today we’re painting some sidewalks, some parking lines in the parking area and we’re also building some sidewalks and some major cement work is going on. We’re also doing some miscellaneous yard work around the premises. It’s very satisfying and this school is very surprised about the amount of turnout we had out here."

Mahalo to the Oahu Church of Christ for their service to Waiau Elementary School and our Pearl City community. You repesent the Heart & Soul of those who volunteer their time that truly benefits the lives of residents and their ohana in communities across Oahu.
