Pearlridge Rotarians kick-off weekend of “Service Above Self”

Jun 26, 2021 | PC Community

Hope you are having a great weekend! I had a wonderful start to the weekend on Friday serving alongside my fellow Rotary Club of Pearlridge volunteer buddies in the Aiea community.

I was joined by Dick Mosko, Rick Lau, Charlene Ikeda, Barb Craft and Ralph Portmore as we helped out at the KauKau4 Keiki Food Distribution event at the Aiea Hongwanji. Over 100 needy keiki and their ohana received boxes of fresh vegetables, can goods, and fresh gallons of milk donated by Aloha Harvest.

It was such an amazing opportunity to lend a hand with the food distribution on Friday that was coordinated by Aiea community leader Claire Tamamoto and a dedicated group of Aiea community volunteers. Claire is the President of the Aiea Community Association, Director of Aiea Hongwanji Preschool, and 2021 Inaugural Aiea Community Hero Award Recipient.

It was such a rewarding and humbling experience spending time in the community with friends and welcoming the many thank you’s and heartfelt appreciation from the families who received nourishment that helped put food on their table during this difficult time as the state recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early this morning, I regrouped with fellow Rotary Club of Pearlridge volunteers Lasar McCabe, her husband Patrick McCabe, Wes Mun, Rick Lau, Barb Craft, Gordon Arakaki, and Lawrence Agcaoili as we made our monthly visit to the Pearl Harbor Bike Path and Puuloa Springs near Blaisdell Park to pick up rubbish along the bike path and shoreline, and pull weeds in Puuloa Springs area. Lasar fulfilled a goal of clearing the waterway that runs through the springs to Pearl Harbor. It wasn’t easy standing ankle deep in the water and physically clearing away grass, weeds, and debris, but Lasar accomplished her mission this morning. Thank you!

I want to thank my Rotary Club of Pearlridge buddies for opening their hearts to both the Aiea and Pearl City communities through their endless commitment to serve residents and their ohana. It’s very special being a part of their efforts.
