The Pearl City Chargers went down in a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to the visiting Kapolei Hurricanes on Saturday in a tough Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division I battle played at Pearl City High School.
Kapolei’s Kandi Malama-Ahlo went the distance to earn the win pitching seven complete innings while allowing 6 runs, 9 hits with 4 strikeouts. Malam-Ahlo took care of business at the plate hitting 2-3, with a homerun, 2 RBI, and 1 run scored.
Kapolei flexed their power at the plate leaving the yard three times with homeruns by Malama-Ahlo, Kayara Tuiloma, and Hayden Imai. Imai led the Hurricanes at the plate hitting 2-3 with a homerun, double, 3 RBI, and a run scored.
Pearl City starting pitcher Ava Puaatuua took the loss for the Chargers. Puaatuua had a solid performance at the plate hitting 2-4 with 2 RBI and 1 run scored.
The Chargers entered the top of the seventh inning with a 6-5 lead over the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes scored two runs in the top of the inning aided by an error in right centerfield that helped put the Hurricanes in the lead at 7-6. Kapolei starting pitcher Malama-Ahlo shut down Pearl City in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the win.
Kapolei improved to 2-4 in OIA Western Division I standings, while Pearl City, who is still looking for their win of season is 0-6 in league standings. Even at 0-6, the Chargers are playing solid ball on both offense and defense.
