Pearl City Hongwanji Missionn welcomes back the community on Saturday to annual Bon Dance

I would like to share a group of pictures that I shot at Saturday night’s Pearl City Hongwanji Bon Dance. It was so nice to experience the return of the Bon Dance and prayers service after its absence from the community do to the Covid-19 pandemic the past few years.

The Pearl City Hongwanji Mission property was packed as friends and neighbors danced, hung out, and grinded at the many food booths. The shave ice was huge with crunchy ice just the way I like it (doesn’t melt as fast).

It was really nice catching up with great friends and their ohana before heading to Pearl City High School to capture the Chargers 42-12 preseason football win over the visiting Kauai Red Raiders.

Mahalo to Pearl City Hongwanji Rev. Mariko Nishiyama, staff, volunteers, and community supporters for inviting our Pearl City community and visitors to our community to the annual Pearl City Hongwanji Bon Dance to enjoy the festivities while paying our respects and honoring the departed souls from the past year during the prayer service.

The Pearl City Hongwanji Mission has supported and perpetuated the Japanese culture in Pearl City since 1905. Many generations of Pearl City residents and their ohana have been direct beneficiaries of their outreach programs.

Mahalo!
