The Mana Loa NImitz Lions Club (MLNLC) set out early Saturday morning at Highlands Intermediate School to begin work on their latest environmental, sustainable, green, and eco friendly project in the Pearl City community.
Led by MLNLC President Elly Frilles, who is also a 7th grade Science teacher at Highlands Intermediate. MLNLC volunteers have set out to create a Xeriscape-Succulent Garden on the school property fronting Hoolaulea Street.
Saturday morning, MLNLC volunteers cleared out weeds and grass from the original garden landscaping. Volunteers also dug out a couple large rocks and prepped the garden bed with soil conditioner. Volunteers also dug out weeds and grass along the sidewalk and curb on Hoolaulea Street.
When the garden prep work was completed, volunteers planted fresh and healthy succulent plants along with a couple pineapple plants provided by MLNLC past President and current community service chair Dexter Aoki.
We are all extremely excited and honored for the opportunity to cultivate the Highlands Intermediate Xeriscape – Succulent Garden into a beautiful garden landscape setting for the Highlands Intermediate ohana and Pearl City community to enjoy.
Our dream is that the garden will become an inspiring part of our community and daily commute through the neighborhood while enhancing and beautifying a portion of the Highlands Intermediate campus.
