33rd Annual Children’s & Youth Day

I wanted to share our wonderful experience at the 33rd Annual Children’s & Youth Day at the State Capitol this past Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Aloha Hula and Makana the Thunder Drum were invited by the stage manager, (Lady of Aloha) Ms. Karen, to perform on the Main Aloha Stage. Although after-school hula classes at Palisades Elementary hadn’t started yet, three Hawaiian Studies students—Sadie, Cadence, and Leila—agreed to represent Palisades Elementary Aloha Hula. They practiced hard during first recess for two weeks and gave two wonderful performances, dancing to “Ke Ao Nani” with kalaʻau sticks and “He Mele No Lilo.” I am so grateful to their ʻohana for bringing them to perform.

Makana the Thunder Drum also did an amazing job drumming to “What Aloha Means” and “APT.” He has come a long way, especially given that many said it would be impossible for him to learn the drums. We are so grateful to Ms. Karen for giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent, and to Mr. Jerome, Makana’s teacher and mentor, for going the extra mile to set up the drums and support him.

To top it all off, we were thrilled to see Mr. Lorenzo, Makana’s choir teacher, and his guest in the audience.

Mahalo to everyone who made this performance possible. We ALOHA you all!
