Cross Academy (Our Savior Lutheran School) in Aiea, recently came together, led by the school’s Youth Leadership Interact Club (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pearlridge) and LJHA to raise disaster relief funds for victims of the devasting earthquake in Syria and Turkey. The entire school participated in the “Penny War” fundraiser with proceeds raised for the Lutheran World Fund.

Last week from February 8 through February 15, Penny War containers were placed in each classroom with pennies collected counted as positive points. Each silver coin collected went towards negative points for other classrooms. Dropping a quarter in another classrooms bucket took away 25 points from their total.

Principal Clarence De Lude, Cross Academy (Our Savior Lutheran School)

“Just finished counting. 4th grade won in points. Office raised the most money, but for classes, 4th grade raised the most money and 5th grade came in second. Total amount raised was $384.07 and 4th grade had 2,950 points and raised $51.60. 5th grade raised $47.82. The office raised $63.52. That’s a lot of pennies!

Conner Tengan (Interact): “There were so many pennies!”

RJ: “It was a fun, competitive game that brought our classes together.”
