I was truly honored on Tuesday to once again represent the community, MyPearlCity.com, and Pearl City Shopping Center Merchants Association at Lehua Elementary’s 3rd Quarter School Community Council meeting held in the school library.

An LES administrator, teacher, classified staff, parents, students and community members all come together to serve on the SCC.

Lehua Elementary School (LES) Principal Michael Sugano and LES Parent Community Network Coordinator (PCNC} Margaret Yamamoto led Tuesday’s SCC meeting.

The SCC meeting opened with everyone in attendance sharing their thoughts when asked: “What does leadership mean to you?”

I was inspired by LES students on the SCC committee who each shared their heartfelt, inspirational thoughts and vision that complimented the school’s leadership motto presented on the school’s website;

“Learning today to be LEADERS of tomorrow.”

Principal Sugano gave us a 3rd quarter update regarding school progress, successes, issues, and efforts for school improvement and growth.

The SCC had a wonderful round table discussion addressing issues such as the following below:

  1. Traffic Safety Fronting School
  2. Speeding (keeping students, parents, and others safe in crosswalk fronting school on Lehua Avenue.
  3. Discussion on Implementing:
  4. Raised crosswalk speed hump
  5. Blinking safety traffic lights
  6. Electronic Speed Radar Billboard
  7.  Traffic Safety Awareness Sign waving partnership with school, HPD and community volunteers to slow down traffic (speeders on Lehua Avenue).
  • After School Programs and Clubs
  • Support from community volunteers and local businesses
  • Fundraising campaigns

Mahalo to HPD Officer Taryn Osborne and HPD Officer Ray Do from the Pearl City District 3 Community Policing Team for answering committee members’ questions regarding traffic safety and also presenting information handouts on:
