A Tribute to Excellence
In a short time at Pearl City High School, one educator has fundamentally shifted the energy of our halls through a “tireless dedication” to student success. Vanessa Tadena is a master of the “learning-friendly” environment, where every lesson is a purposeful blend of high expectations and deep empathy. By utilizing sophisticated strategies like “Think-Write-Pair-Share” and interactive data dives, they have created a classroom where literacy isn’t just a subject—it’s a bridge to self-confidence. As one colleague noted, Ms. Tadena is a “true team player” who “does not shy away from being transparent and upfront” when advocating for the betterment of her students, ensuring that every learner has the tools they need to flourish.
The most powerful evidence of this Ms.Tadena’s impact, however, comes from the students themselves. One student shared, “She includes my voice by giving me a chance to speak up because I am more on the quiet side,” while another reflected, “My reading got better, and little by little, I am improving… I feel proud of myself.” A fellow educator observed that in this classroom, “all students’ ideas are valued,” and the atmosphere is one of total equity. Ms. Tadena has the rare gift of “reading the room” and adjusting in the moment to support a student through a struggle or celebrate a win. For her incredible growth, her proactive spirit, and the bright future she is building for our students, we are proud to celebrate Ms. Vanessa Tadena as our Pearl City-Waipahu Complex Area Milken Teacher of Promise.
In 2006, the Milken Educators of Hawaii (MEH) established the annual Teacher of Promise award to emulate the spirit of the Milken Family Foundation. This award recognizes Hawaiʻi’s outstanding up-and-coming classroom teachers who demonstrate tremendous potential in the areas:
1. Establishment of Student Learning Experiences
2. Use of Varied Instructional Strategies
3. Professional Development
4. Curriculum Development
5. Substantive Innovation
6. Promotion of Supportive/Collaborative Relationships
7. Overall Growth and Promise
In 2006, a $50 monetary award was given to each Teacher of Promise recipient. The award has grown over the years and now each complex area finalist receives a $1000 award, and one state winner will receive $4000 to continue his/her own professional development. A very special thank you goes out to Greg Young, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union CEO, for the very generous corporate sponsorship which makes this annual award possible.
