Hawaiʻi’s Public Libraries Begin Reopening Following Lala

From: Hawaii State Public Library System

The Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS) is working to reopen libraries across the state following the impacts of Lala, with the safety of patrons and staff as the top priority.

Because conditions vary across HSPLS’s 50 libraries on six islands, reopening times differ by location. Some libraries continue to address storm-related impacts, including power outages, downed trees and other conditions that may affect access to the buildings.

Below are the latest library openings and closures beginning August 18, 2026. Libraries that are cleared to reopen will resume their normal schedules unless a different opening time is noted in the schedule below:

Hawaiʻi Island

CLOSED: All branches

Kauaʻi

The following libraries will open at 1:00 pm: Hanapēpē and Princeville.

Maui, Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi

Patrons are encouraged to check the schedule before visiting their local library and to check the HSPLS website regularly for the latest updates as conditions change.

HSPLS appreciates the patience and understanding of our communities as library staff work to safely restore services statewide.
